The Hawker Siddley Harrier

The Harrier, the world’s first vertical takeoff fighter. evolved from the P.1127 project and the next version, the Kestrel. The Harrier has gradually evolved through the GR1-GR3 and the AV-8A, the American version.

Later aircraft were upgraded to the GR5, GR7 and the GR9. Other Mks were operated by the Royal Navy and several overseas air forces.

The main operating base in the UK was RAF Wittering, until all remaining Harriers moved over to RAF Cottesmore until they were taken out of service.
In the final week of service Cottesmore hosted a large amount of ex Harrier people and put on a fitting tribute to the Harrier.
